I\u2019ve been training for years, but only in the last couple of years have foot locks really caught my attention. It all started at Rob Taylor\u2019s excellent gym in Cardiff, where the Daisy Fresh crew held a weekend seminar. That weekend lit the spark, but it took a lot of experimenting (and a fair bit of grabbing feet) before I started to really get it. I\u2019m a slow learner, but I got there.<\/span><\/p>

Now I love nothing more than throwing up an <\/span>ashi<\/span><\/em> to attack a leg\u2014a nd I\u2019m often successful (six taps today alone, not that anyone\u2019s counting).<\/span><\/p>

So, are foot locks legit or just sneaky nonsense? Let\u2019s look at it from two angles:<\/span><\/p>

Sport:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>

Legit. 100%. They get the tap, they win the match\u2014end of story. Foot locks are among the most popular submissions in the pro game, and they work.<\/span><\/p>

Real fighting:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>

This one\u2019s trickier. If you secure a good bite on someone\u2019s leg and avoid getting punched in the head, you can absolutely wreck their ability to walk. But in a real fight, how often do you end up on the ground clutching someone\u2019s foot? Not impossible, but not likely. That said, a trained grappler always has more tools than your average loudmouth. And if you did catch a leg and crank a straight foot lock at full speed, your opponent would be limping for days and get some time off work (which they might thank you for).<\/span><\/p>

To really test this theory, I\u2019m (jokingly!) considering finishing this bottle of whiskey, heading to the high street, and calling everyone leaving Wetherspoons a dickhead until I get the chance to try.<\/span><\/p>

Three possible outcomes:<\/span><\/p>

1. I win. Opponent can\u2019t walk. I help them into a taxi.<\/p>

2. I lose. I end up in A&E getting patched up.<\/p>

3. I get nicked for GBH and spend the night in the cells reflecting on my life choices.<\/p>
